T-joints are one of the primary types of structural elements in thin-walled, complex-profile ship structures, providing the necessary stiffness and strength at minimal weight. They are widely used in hull and superstructure components, where uniform stress distribution, fillet formation, and the absence of defects in the weld zone are critical. The aim of this study was to investigate technological schemes for laser welding T-joints made of thin-sheet heat-resistant steel AISI 321 in various spatial positions and to determine the influence of welding parameters on the geometric, structural, and mechanical characteristics of welds. Technological welding schemes in horizontal and vertical spatial positions were studied, performed both in continuous and pulsed laser radiation modes, with variations in power, welding speed, and laser beam defocusing. Visual, radiographic, and metallographic inspections were carried out in accordance with ISO 13919-1:1996 and ISO 17639:2003, while static tensile testing followed ISO 6892-1:2016. The results showed that for the horizontal spatial position, the most promising schemes were those with two passes in pulsed welding mode, ensuring guaranteed fillet formation on both sides of the rib, a uniform transition from flange to rib, and high mechanical properties. Samples welded according to schemes №1 and №2 exhibited strength exceeding that of the base metal; however, additional passes, as in scheme №3, led to a decrease in fracture resistance due to repeated heating and cooling of the weld metal. For the vertical spatial position, it was established that stable weld and fillet formation is achieved over a wider range of parameters than in the horizontal position. Samples welded according to schemes №4–№7 corresponded to a high-quality level “B,” with the majority of failures occurring in the base metal of the rib, indicating high mechanical performance of the welds. The best results were obtained using schemes with two main passes and an additional “smoothing” pass, providing stable weld geometry and guaranteed fillet formation on both sides. Vertical welding also ensured lower variability in fracture resistance (10–20% higher than average values in the horizontal position) and more stable weld formation. Metallographic studies revealed the formation of an austenitic dendritic structure in the weld zone with a uniform crystal size in the flange–rib transition, while radiographic inspection confirmed the absence of internal defects in high-quality welds. Comparison of the welding schemes demonstrated that the optimal solutions for industrial applications are those that minimize the effect of gravity on joint formation and ensure controlled fillet geometry.
