dc.description.abstract1The United Nations in 1992 held the Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro and outlined a program of action for the XXI century to achieve sustainable development between human consumption of resources and the Earth's ability to sustain life. Sustainable development determines a balance between the urgent matters of the environment, economics, social issues, and improving the quality of life for people. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reflect the urgent problems of today: climate change, inequality, and poverty; therefore their integration into education is crucial. Concentrating on these goals, students will encounter issues that affect their future. These problems are not sufficiently studied at university, particularly if the students do not major in the natural sciences. Foreign language courses differ from other subjects because they can allow discussions of any topic, making them an ideal platform for addressing the Sustainable Development Goals as well as developing intercultural critical thinking, and social responsibility. In practice, integration of SDGs into language learning can be achieved through thematic units such as Nature, Weather, Environment, and Education which are learnt according to the curriculum, and provide contexts for developing both linguistic and global competencies, allowing students to link practice with real-world issues. Examples of exercises and tasks for both classroom and online learning are provided. It is noted that the most interesting tasks for students are the quizzes to guess one of the 17 Global Goals encoded in a riddle or a particular subject, creating an online poster for one of the goals, and debates where they discuss the achievability of these goals. Such an approach enhances learners’ motivation and strengthens communicative competence in both professional and academic contexts.
